Course Curriculum Changes & Guidance
New York State has made significant changes to the Global History Curriculum and Regents Exam starting with the 2017-18 School Year. You might want to look at the NYC Social Studies Scope and Sequence and the NYS Grades 9-12 Social Studies Framework for guidance and the specific curriculum changes.
New Exam Global History II Format (2019) Information
Curriculum & Course Changes
Curriculum Format Before 2017-18 School Year
- 9th Grade - Semester 1 - Global History I
- 9th Grade - Semester 2 - Global History II
- 10th Grade - Semester 1 - Global History III
- 10th Grade - Semester 2 - Global History IV
Curriculum Format for the 2017-18 school year.
- 9th Grade - Semester 1 & 2 - Global History I (All topics before 1750)
- 10th Grade - Semester 1 - Global History III
- 10th Grade - Semester 2 - Global History IV
Curriculum Format for the 2018-19 school year & beyond.
- 9th Grade - Semester 1 & 2 - Global History I (All topics before 1750)
- 10th Grade - Semester 1 & 2 - Global History II (All topics after 1750)
NYS Global History Regents Exam Changes
January 2018
- Students will take the pre-June 2018 format (indicated below)
- The Global History and Geography Regents Exam has three parts.
- Part I: Multiple Choice- 50 Multiple Choice Questions usually in chronological order from earliest to latest.
- Part II: 1 Thematic Essay Question- It can be on a variety of topics including belief systems, revolutions, important people etc.
- Part III: DBQ (Document Based Question)- A series of approximately 9 documents each followed by 1 or 2 scaffolding questions. Then 1 essay question based on the documents.
June 2018 to June 2020
- Students will take the new exam in modified format now called the Global History Transitional Exam (indicated below)
- The Global History and Geography Regents Exam has three parts.
- Exam will cover topics from 1750 to present, except June 2018 which will also include the Scientific Revolution.
- Part I: Multiple Choice - 30 Multiple Choice Questions usually in chronological order from earliest to latest.
- Part II: 1 Thematic Essay Question- It can be on a variety of topics including belief systems, revolutions, important people etc.
- Part III: DBQ (Document Based Question)- A series of approximately 9 documents each followed by 1 or 2 scaffolding questions. Then 1 essay question based on the documents.
June 2019 & Beyond
- Students will take the new exam in the following format (indicated below)
- The Global History and Geography Regents Exam has three parts.
- 28 Stimulus-Based Multiple Choice questions
- 2 Sets of Short Answer (Paragraph) Constructed-Response Questions with a total of seven (7) Questions.
- 1 Extended Essay (Enduring Issue based upon 4-5 Documents) = No Scaffold Response Questions (Old-Style DBQ's)

- New York State has created a new exam for Global History & Geography students beginning in June 2019.
- This exam will address and assess different skills than Global History & Geography exams prior to June 2019.

| Part I | Multiple choice questions in a document based format. The exam will have a document(s) (text, map, political cartoon, graph, chart), and 3-4 questions based upon the document(s). The first question will be a direct question with the answer found within the document(s). The second question will be an inference question based upon the time period and/or historical circumstances surrounding the document(s). The third and possible fourth questions will be based upon your answer the 2nd question and the historical circumstances surrounding the document(s). | ||||||
| Part II | Two related documents which will require that the historical context/circumstances will be identified and explained. Second, sourcing the documents is achieved by analysis questions that are related to a document's Audience, Purpose, Point-of-View, and or Bias. Third, a which could be any of the follow: causation (cause & effect), and identifying and explaining a Turning Point or a Comparison (similarities and/or differences). | ||||||
| Part III | An enduring issue is any problem or situation that has existed across many time periods in history. It can also be an event that affected people or was affected by people at the time and into the future. An enduring issue is one that many individuals or groups have attempted to address with varying degrees of success. In the essay, identify and define an enduring issue raised by this set of documents. Lastly,by using evidence from the documents, argue why the issue selected is significant and how it has endured across time. This is achieved by discussing the Profundity (How profound/deeply people were affected), Quantity (How many people were affected and from where), and Durability (Has the problem continued and/or lasted overtime). |
Changes to Quizzes on www.classroomexplorations.org
- Starting for the 2017-18 School Year:
- This website will focus on Multiple Choice quizzes for the changes that will occur. Older style quizzes will still be available.
- Global History I and Global History II Quizzes will be available in the old multiple choice style format.
- Global History II Quizzes will be changed to reflect the curriculum from 1750 to present.
- Global History II Quizzes based upon the stimulus-based style format will be available as they are created throughout the 2017-18 school year. They will not be needed until June 2019 with the new Global History II Regents Exam.
- Global History II Constructed-Response Short Answer Paragraph style format questions will available as they are created throughout the 2017-18 school year. They will not be needed until June 2019 with the new Global History II Regents Exam.
