Geographic Determinism - The concept that physical features of the earth (mountains, river valleys, deserts, etc) determine the success or failure of a civilization.
One example would be how Mesopotamia and the Tigris and Euphrates river valley provided 1) fertile soil for farming; 2) water for irrigation; 3) and the river for transportation to trade their surplus food.
